The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, Mardrus, Fasquelle edition, 8 volumes in red calfskin with original lettering and binding label
Important complete eight-volume set of the Book of One Thousand and One Nights in the famous translation by Joseph-Charles Mardrus, published by Eugène Fasquelle in Paris.
This remarkable illustrated edition is adorned with facsimiles of miniatures, borders, and illuminations inspired by Persian and Hindu manuscripts, enriched by numerous color plates. The volumes are bound in red half-calf, with richly decorated spines featuring gilt Orientalist tooling, and midnight blue title and volume labels. Red and black marbled boards, bookmarks retained.
The set has the added interest of being accompanied by its original correspondence with the publisher: a typed letter from Eugène Fasquelle dated August 23, 1924, mentioning the staggered delivery of the volumes, as well as the original invoice of November 5, 1924, for the eight illustrated volumes.
Very fine complete eight-volume copy. Red half-calf bindings with gilt Oriental decoration, red and black marbled boards. Interiors generally fresh with uniform slight yellowing of the paper and discreet scattered foxing. A few plates or gatherings show slight loosening, particularly in volume I. Volume label missing from the first volume. Bookmarks retained. Set remaining attractive and beautifully presented.
